Prayer and care

Why does God seem to answer small prayers while atrocities continue?

By Will Bourne · Question 43

The direct answer

I cannot explain why someone finds a lost item after praying while people pleading for protection are killed. If Christians credit God with small outcomes, we must also hear the questions raised by catastrophic losses.

The fuller answer

It is understandable to thank God for an ordinary good thing. The problem comes when we announce a particular intervention as established fact and refuse to examine the unanswered pleas beside it. The victims did not matter less because their story ended differently.

An event occurring after prayer does not establish what caused it. Look at the evidence, consider other explanations, and describe the conclusion proportionately. A statement of gratitude and a demonstrated miracle are not the same claim.

Human freedom helps identify responsibility for atrocities. It does not fully explain why an able and loving God does not restrain a particular perpetrator. Saying God has reasons names a belief about providence; it does not identify those reasons or complete the moral explanation.

Christians confess God’s presence in suffering through Christ and hope for justice and restoration. That hope does not explain why someone was not protected today. It should also move us toward the help we can responsibly give, rather than make prayer a reason to avoid action.

The objection worth answering

Are you counting every success for God and explaining away every failure? That would be unfair. We should acknowledge unanswered requests and apply comparable standards to the intervention claims we welcome. Christian belief that God hears prayer does not make every interpretation of a favorable event reliable.

Scripture and its use

Psalm 10 and Habakkuk 1:2–4 voice protest over violence and apparent divine inaction. Luke 13:1–5 challenges a simple inference from tragic death to exceptional guilt. Romans 8:18–27 gives Christian hope amid groaning; it is not a complete explanation for each atrocity.
