Grief and questions about God

Can I be angry with God?

By Will Bourne · Question 15

The direct answer

You can tell God that you are angry. Scripture gives people language for complaint, grief, and protest. Pretending you feel peaceful is not a requirement for honest prayer.

Fuller explanation

Anger may carry a belief that God failed you, allowed something unbearable, or did not keep a promise you were taught to expect. Those are different claims. Bringing them into the open lets us examine what happened and what was actually promised. Silencing the emotion leaves the underlying question untouched.

Psalm 13 begins with a person who feels forgotten. Psalm 22 speaks from abandonment. Job protests his treatment. These passages do not establish that every accusation against God is correct. They do establish that the Bible makes room for people to speak while their understanding and emotions are unsettled.

A church can make this harder when it treats an angry person as a threat to the room’s atmosphere. Someone may need to be heard before they are ready to hear a correction. That does not require everyone to agree with every conclusion. It requires enough patience to discover what the person is saying.

Being honest about anger also leaves room for it to change. You can examine an assumption, revise a claim, or find language that is more accurate without denying the loss that brought the anger. The goal is not to stay angry forever or to make anger disappear on someone else’s schedule.

The objection we still need to face

Is telling God I am angry disrespectful?

Tone and intention matter, but honest lament is not the same as contempt. A person can address God with a question they cannot yet ask calmly. We can invite respect without making emotional composure the price of being heard.
