Scripture & Insight

Mercy attentive to the person before us

Begin with Jude 1:22 in your Bible. Read Jude 1:22 within the whole letter, especially verses 20 through 25. Notice how prayer, God’s love, waiting for Christ’s mercy, differentiated compassion, and praise belong together.

The following reading summarizes Commentary 10, “Mercy for Those Who Doubt,” with a selected excerpt from the manuscript.

Jude’s WEB Classic wording calls for compassion with distinction. Will acknowledges the verse’s textual and interpretive discussion while following its clear pastoral movement toward mercy and discernment.

A careful response attends to what is known, what remains uncertain, whether someone is at risk, and what help can responsibly be offered. Different circumstances require different forms of care, while each person’s dignity remains intact.

Compassion gives conviction a truthful and humane setting. Questions can be heard patiently, limits named honestly, and qualified support offered where needed. The community awaiting Christ’s mercy learns to extend care that can be received freely.

Selected manuscript excerpt

Mercy attentive to the person before us

Jude has called the beloved to build, pray, remain in love, and wait for the mercy of Jesus Christ. He now turns that life outward. “On some have compassion, making a distinction.” The sentence is short, but it requires patient attention. The people addressed are not told to use one harsh answer for everyone touched by the trouble in the community. Compassion belongs among their first responses.

Will Bourne · From Commentary 10 on Jude 1:22, in Kept for Jesus Christ

Following Christ through this movement

The beloved community waits for the mercy of Jesus Christ and remains within God’s love. His mercy gives its outward response a center amid serious warning and troubled relationships.

God’s keeping power sustains faithful life. Prayer through the Holy Spirit, truthful discernment, and compassionate care belong together as people continue in the received gospel.

Will’s Perspective

The formation emphasis in this volume

Will’s commentary preserves Jude’s severity toward harmful conduct while giving compassion its proper place toward people facing uncertainty. The response begins with attention to the actual person and circumstance.

The formation emphasis keeps conviction, mercy, and discernment together. Patient listening, honest limits, room for questions, and appropriate help allow truth to be offered without taking control of another person’s conscience or choices.
