By Will Bourne · Bourne Again Media LLC

Haggai 1–2 · 1–2

Overview

The journey of this volume

How do we keep serving when present work looks small beside what we remember? Haggai speaks to a returned community rebuilding in Jerusalem amid limited resources and discouragement. Begin with chapter 2, where courage rests on God’s presence and the promise that His Spirit remains among them. This journey invites honest remembrance, shared responsibility, and work whose methods reflect the God it seeks to honor.

What faithful work is actually entrusted to me in this season?

What you’ll explore
  • God’s presence amid unfinished work
  • Honest memory without comparison’s rule
  • Shared courage and responsibility
  • Holiness in the way work is done
Scripture & Insight

Courage grounded in presence

Begin with Haggai 2 in your Bible. Read Haggai 2 with the rebuilding community in view. Notice the remembered house, the call to work, the Spirit’s presence, and the examination of holiness.

The following reading summarizes Chapter 2, “The Latter Glory Will Be Greater,” with a selected excerpt from the manuscript.

Haggai 2 names the grief of comparing the rebuilt house with remembered glory. God addresses leaders and people together, inviting courage for the work rather than denying its limitations.

The promise of His Spirit anchors that courage in covenant presence. Will connects strength with shared responsibility, appropriate tools, rest, and truthful acknowledgment of capacity. Work can remain faithful while progress is modest.

Encouragement leads into examination: sacred labor does not make every method holy. The chapter asks the community to consider its ways, receive correction, and trust God’s promised blessing without treating religious activity as a purchase of favor.

Selected manuscript excerpt

Courage grounded in presence

The promise is direct: My Spirit lives among you. Therefore, do not be afraid. God does not ground courage in the size of the workforce, the impressiveness of the materials, or the approval of surrounding powers. His presence is the center. The people work because He is with them, not because their work can manufacture His nearness.

Following Christ through this movement

Jesus brings the temple story toward God’s presence in the Son, whose body is raised after the cross. His resurrection reveals the chosen King and a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

United to Christ, believers become a dwelling of God by the Spirit. Their shared life bears witness through truth, mercy, holiness, and care reaching work, resources, speech, and leadership.

A question to carry

What comparison makes today’s responsibility seem worthless? What support or correction would help me work faithfully within my present limits?

One faithful step

Name one responsibility that is truly yours. Choose a manageable next step, the support needed, and a realistic boundary for time or capacity. Give thanks for another person’s contribution and keep the work open to correction.

Prayer

A prayer for the journey

Faithful God, You remain with Your people in unfinished work. Jesus, free us from comparison and the need for spectacle. Holy Spirit, give us shared courage, honest methods, and grace for the task before us. Amen.

Will’s Perspective

The formation emphasis in this volume

Will reads Haggai’s encouragement within the real limits and memories of the returned community. God’s presence supplies the ground for courage before visible splendor can reassure the workers.

The commentary joins faithful work with examination of its methods. The task can be shared, planned, and corrected while remaining dependent on grace and attentive to the people who carry it.
