Faithful in Babylon

A Formation Commentary on Daniel 1 through 6

By Will Bourne · Bourne Again Media LLC

Daniel 1–6 · 1–6

Overview

The journey of this volume

How do we serve faithfully when someone else controls the terms? Daniel’s first movement follows displaced Jewish servants through learning, work, prayer, worship, and danger within imperial courts. Begin at the king’s table, where inward allegiance becomes a wise request made with companions. This journey invites courage, discernment, and humble service grounded in God’s reign rather than the need to appear heroic.

What is forming my allegiance, and where do I need a wise response?

What you’ll explore
  • Faithful presence under pressure
  • Learning with discernment
  • Conviction and wise boundaries
  • Gifts cultivated for service
Scripture & Insight

Companions for faithful discernment

Begin with Daniel 1 in your Bible. Read Daniel 1 before focusing on the decision about food. Notice the losses, imposed names, learning, companions, and gifts that surround Daniel’s request.

The following reading summarizes Chapter 1, “Faithfulness at the King’s Table,” with a selected excerpt from the manuscript.

Daniel begins with siege and forced relocation. The court’s training, provisions, and imposed names shape the setting in which the four young Judeans must discern faithful participation. The narrative honors their action without calling the coercion good.

Daniel learns and serves while identifying a boundary he cannot cross. His request attends to the official’s fear and offers a specific alternative. The chapter supplies wisdom for discernment, rather than a universal dietary formula or a promise that every request will succeed.

God gives knowledge and skill to all four companions. Will connects their gifts with diligent service, shared prayer, and a long obedience that outlasts changing rulers. Faithfulness receives outcomes from God without trying to control them.

Selected manuscript excerpt

Companions for faithful discernment

Faithful community does not remove personal responsibility, but it keeps resolve from becoming self-made heroism. Trusted companions can help us test an interpretation, recognize fear, prepare words, remember Scripture, attend to safety, and pray. They may see when we are compromising. They may also see when pride has made us needlessly combative.

Following Christ through this movement

The commentary follows Daniel’s allegiance toward Jesus, the faithful Son, tested over food, identity, and kingdoms. Christ offers more than an example: His forgiveness and transforming grace meet our divided hearts.

The cross and resurrection keep Christian courage grounded in grace and hope. By the Spirit, we learn without surrendering truth, serve without worshiping power, and respond without contempt.

Prayer

A prayer for the journey

Sovereign God, settle our hearts in Your love when circumstances feel beyond our control. Jesus, faithful Son, teach us integrity without contempt. Holy Spirit, give us wise companions, truthful words, and courage for the responsibility entrusted to us. Amen.

Will’s Perspective

Why this movement matters

I wanted readers to meet Daniel’s whole witness, beyond heroic stories or slogans about success. These displaced Jewish servants live under empires that reshape their public lives and repeatedly discover that the living God cannot be controlled.

Faithfulness is a formed life of prayer, wisdom, courage, humility, community, and hope beneath God’s reign. That formation matters wherever people serve within institutions they do not fully control.
