Why do churches protect leaders instead of people who were harmed?
By Will Bourne · Question 17
The direct answer
When that happens, reputation, money, loyalty, or fear of losing the ministry may have taken priority over people. Those pressures can explain a defensive response. They do not excuse concealment or intimidation.
The fuller answer
Examine each case carefully. Staff may depend on a leader for employment. Friends may struggle to believe an allegation. A congregation may fear losing work it values. None of that determines whether the allegation is true or makes the institution entitled to silence the person reporting it.
A responsible response distinguishes a report, supporting evidence, an investigation, and a finding. Take the concern seriously, protect against retaliation, preserve relevant information, and use a process capable of examining senior leadership itself.
Fairness to an accused person and care for someone reporting harm can coexist. Neither requires letting the accused leader control the whole process. Confidentiality should protect people and a responsible investigation, rather than becoming a blanket demand for silence.
Even when someone repents, fitness for a former role remains a separate question. People harmed must not be recruited into a comeback story. Question 127 develops that distinction, and Question 46 addresses repair that remains possible.
The objection worth answering
Could a false accusation destroy an innocent person? Yes, and that risk makes careful fact-finding essential. It does not justify suppressing complaints. A credible process can identify wrongdoing, reject unsupported conclusions, and correct a false account while protecting people from retaliation.
Scripture and its use
Mark 10:42–45 and First Peter 5:2–3: authority serves rather than dominates. Ezekiel 34:1–10: shepherds are accountable for their treatment of the flock. These provide moral direction, not a complete modern investigative procedure.
