What is the unforgivable sin?

The direct answer
In Mark 3, Jesus gives this warning when religious teachers attribute his liberating work to an unclean spirit. The context concerns a hardened rejection of the Spirit’s work, not an accidental phrase, an unwanted thought, or an honest question.
What prompted Jesus’ warning?
Mark 3:22–30 places the saying in a dispute about the source of Jesus’ power. His opponents call the work evil. Mark explicitly connects the warning with their claim that Jesus had an unclean spirit. Any explanation should begin there rather than invent a list of forbidden words.
Why is this different from other sin?
A common Christian explanation is that persistently calling God’s saving work evil rejects the very source of repentance and forgiveness. The issue is not a shortage of mercy in God but a settled resistance to it.
Christian traditions differ on whether the saying describes a specific act of blasphemy in Jesus’ ministry, continuing hardened resistance, or final refusal to repent. These explanations overlap, but they should not be presented as identical or as though the passage answers every boundary question.
What if I am frightened that I have done it?
An unwanted thought, moment of anger, season of doubt, or desire to understand is not what Mark describes. Wanting to turn toward God and receive forgiveness is very different from insisting that the Spirit’s work is evil.
First John 1:9 directs people who confess their sins toward God’s forgiveness. The appropriate response to a desire for mercy is to seek it, not to assume that a disturbing thought has permanently excluded you.
How should this warning be used?
It calls readers to take resistance to truth seriously. It should not be used by a leader to make questioning that leader equivalent to blaspheming God. A human teacher’s authority is not identical with the Holy Spirit. Read the whole scene and keep the distinction clear.
