Why did biblical men have multiple wives if marriage is supposed to be between two people?

The direct answer

Because the Bible reports life in a fallen world without endorsing every practice it records. Genesis gives the one-flesh pattern before it narrates polygamy, and the later stories repeatedly show rivalry, inequality, and disorder within plural households.

Fuller explanation

The first explicit polygamist appears in Cain's line. Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others later live within plural arrangements. Their presence in the story does not turn every feature of their households into God's design.

Personally, I can understand why consenting adults may not see plural marriage as inherently harmful. But I am not called to make my personal comfort the ministry's authority. As a steward of Scripture, I teach the creation pattern Scripture gives and the direction Jesus draws from it.

This is an important interpretive discipline: description is not prescription. The Bible's honesty about its people allows us to see both God's work and the disorder they carried.

The objection we still need to face

Why did God regulate polygamy instead of prohibiting it immediately?

Regulation can limit harm within an existing social world without declaring the arrangement ideal. That answer still leaves questions about accommodation and the people who suffered within those structures. We should acknowledge those questions rather than treat regulation as complete approval.
