To the person who is tired of performing,

You may be good at carrying responsibility. People may know you as capable, dependable, spiritual, productive, strong, or useful. They may not know how exhausted you are beneath the version of you that keeps succeeding.

Performance becomes more than diligence when achievement is no longer something you do and becomes the evidence you use to prove you deserve belonging. Then rest feels dangerous. Need feels embarrassing. Correction feels like rejection. Relationships become audiences, and even obedience can become a way of earning the acceptance grace has already offered.

Diligence and performance are not the same

Diligence cares about the work, the people affected, and the responsibility entrusted to us. Performance is preoccupied with what the work proves about us. Diligence can receive correction. Performance experiences correction as exposure.

You do not have to become careless in order to become free. You can work with excellence without asking every result to carry the weight of your identity.

Grace does not make you passive

Acceptance in Christ is not a reward for flawless usefulness. It is also not permission to abandon responsibility. Grace changes the source of obedience. We no longer obey to persuade God or everyone else that we are worth keeping. We obey because love has given us somewhere truthful to stand.

From that place, we can admit limitation, apologize, learn, rest, say no, ask for help, and still return to faithful work.

Release the survival role carefully

Some masks once helped you survive. Competence may have protected you in chaos. Achievement may have opened doors in an environment that overlooked you. Constant strength may have felt necessary when no one else was dependable. Do not despise the younger version of you who learned those strategies.

But what protected you in one season can imprison you in another. Freedom may require safe relationships in which you practice being honest before you feel impressive.

Become known

Being admired is not the same as being known. Being needed is not the same as being loved. A life built entirely around usefulness eventually loses contact with desire, grief, limitation, and joy.

Choose one place where you can stop managing the impression. Tell one appropriate truth. Receive one gift you did not earn. Rest without turning rest into another achievement.

Awake to the performance that has been shaping you. Align with the acceptance, truth, and responsibility of Christ. Act by removing one unnecessary mask and practicing one honest form of rest or obedience.

You are allowed to become a person, not merely a result.

With grace for the tired places, Will
